Materials Stewardship: Eco-efficiency and Product Policy

15 October 2007

Metals are highly durable substances that, in theory, can be recycled indefinitely with no degradation in properties. This report explores the relationship between three concepts that are being applied to help exploit and assess these benefits in the real world – materials stewardship, eco-efficiency and government-led product policy.

Summary

  • By understanding the interrelationship between the concepts of materials stewardship, eco-efficiency and product policy, the mining and metals industry will be better able to:
    • Identify opportunities for improvement in production.
    • Increase understanding of the attributes of the industry's materials by those managing downstream processes and products and by policy makers who influence their use in society.
