Materials Stewardship: Eco-efficiency and Product Policy

15 October 2007

Metals are highly durable substances that, in theory, can be recycled indefinitely with no degradation in properties.

  • This report explores the relationship between three concepts that are being applied to help exploit and assess these benefits in the real world – materials stewardship, eco-efficiency and government-led product policy.
  • By understanding the interrelationship between the concepts of materials stewardship, eco-efficiency and product policy, the mining and metals industry will be better able to:
    • Identify opportunities for improvement in production.
    • Increase understanding of the attributes of the industry's materials by those managing downstream processes and products and by policy makers who influence their use in society.
