COVID-19 Update

Like all global industries, mining and metals is being affected by COVID-19 (Coronavirus). Our members are facing a variety of challenges, depending on the varying pace of the epidemic in different countries, and the responses of governments around the world.

In the mining and metals sector we are seeing tailored and focused strategies and tactics adopted in accordance with public advice and the local situation. Many mines play a vital role in supporting their local communities which is critically important during this time of global crisis.

Notwithstanding the direct effects of the virus, its wider influence on mental health, and personal wellbeing is significant. Addressing these issues and getting the response right is challenging and, aside from practical actions on the ground, requires open communications to support alignment, solidarity, and culture change.

ICMM is supporting members as they respond to COVID-19, by working to improve the flow of information and best practice between them. We are also working with other associations, to facilitate increased communications and collaboration.

Long term, our industry will have to work together to help support the recovery from the shock that COVID-19 is inflicting on the global economy and local communities. Planning for this and helping suppliers weather the crisis - especially smaller ones - will also be imperative.

In the meantime, care for the safety, health and wellbeing of all workers, contractors, communities and consumers remains of paramount importance.
