Industry and innovation
Ensuring sustainable industrialisation, infrastructure and innovation.
Our world faces multiple challenges – including climate change, depletion of natural resources, urbanisation, growing population and increased consumption.
The circumstances in which we live our daily lives and do business are continually evolving, yet the basic models for providing economic and social prosperity remain the same: adding value to raw materials in production processes, trading goods to boost global wealth and providing services in response to demand.
To ensure economic and social prosperity while protecting the environment, we need to fundamentally adapt the ways in which we manufacture goods, move people and goods, deliver services, and design and use infrastructure. Industrial practices must also be clean, efficient and resilient to climate change-induced shocks, while new technologies – enabled by products from the mining and minerals sector – are also essential in meeting the aims of the United Nations’ Social Development Goal 9 (SDG9): to build resilient infrastructure, promote inclusive and sustainable industrialisation and foster innovation.
