'Promoting responsible practices' - ICMM's June Newsletter

ICMM has released the latest issue of its Good Practice newsletter. In his leader, ICMM’s new Chief Operating Officer John Groom introduces the theme of promoting responsible practices in the industry. This is particularly topical with the forthcoming publication of our Good Practice Guidance reports on mine closure planning and on HIV/AIDS, TB and malaria.

As well as a reflective article from departing president Paul Mitchell, the newsletter includes three features from member company representatives. Teck Cominco’s Mike Agg discusses the challenge of improving resource productivity, and notes the importance of ICMM’s work on areas such as life cycle assessment and eco-efficiency in supporting what is a cradle to cradle approach to sustainability.

Elsewhere Renato Amorim links Vale’s performance to its management of environmental and social issues, and AngloGold Ashanti’s Paul Hollesen takes up the importance of planning for closure in an integrated way from the inception of the mine. Maarten ten Houten of Philips provides an external perspective from the consumer electronics sector, on responsible mining and metals production.
