Safety and Health Conference
ICMM held its inaugural Safety and Health Conference in November 2006 in Johannesburg. It was attended largely by leaders and managers working in the mining and metals industry.
The program included experiential learning seminars covering all aspects of safety and health, with a particular emphasis on behavioural safety and safety systems. Topics included:
- building a strong safety culture
- how to engage the workforce
- creating a process-disciplined organization
- identifying and managing health hazards
- connecting people to procedures and systems
More than 300 delegates attended the conference. Many speakers made their presentations publicly available.
By sharing expertise and experiences, our members can build on the existing excellent levels of safety and health to make the mining and metals industry even safer.
For ICMM to organize such an event is testament to the importance of the issue, and also of the willingness of our membership to share good practice for the benefit of all. Its unique format meant that it was an exciting event that should result in teams within companies being inspired to change how safety and health are managed in the industry.
