ICMM launches publication in Lao language
ICMM has released a new Lao language version of the Lao PDR Country Case Study: ‘Utilizing mining and mineral resources to foster the sustainable development of the Lao PDR’.
The Lao PDR Case Study is ICMM’s fifth country case study to apply the ‘Mining: Partnerships for Development Toolkit’ which provides a systematic approach to measuring mining’s positive and negative economic and social contribution. It found that mining has come to represent 80% of foreign direct investment (FDI) in Lao and also reveals key challenges. Earlier case studies were carried out in Ghana, Tanzania, Chile and Peru, all of which applied the toolkit.
The mining industry is a significant contributor to Lao’s economy, providing 45% of total exports, 12% of government revenues and 10% of national income. These benefits have been complemented at the local level by stimulating markets and enhancing incomes.
Sponsored by ICMM member MMG, the publication is jointly published by ICMM, the Lao PDR Ministry of Energy and Mines and Ministry of Planning and Investment.
