ICMM leads industry group to strengthen relationship with IMO and UN
The ICMM Minerals and Metals Technical Working Group (MMTWG), met on 10 and 11 January in Phoenix, Arizona, bringing together company and commodity association experts in technical policy issues.
Chaired by Dr. William Adams of Rio Tinto, the group discussed matters related to risk assessment, chemicals management and classification and labelling.
Substantial discussion was held around the issue of regulations governing marine transport and developments at the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) which are beginning to make ICMM’s work more relevant to that audience.
It was agreed that ICMM should take a lead in co-ordinating activities between companies, commodity associations and the IMO to ensure that there is recognition of the robust scientific methods that have been developed through the MMTWG over the past decade.
The group also discussed the UN’s Strategic Approach to International Chemicals Management (SAICM) and specifically how ICMM should report progress against the commitments it has made to the UN in this field. The 23 actions at the heart of ICMM’s Minerals and Metals Management 2020 action plan were reviewed and a conceptual framework for reporting agreed.
This will be finalised in preparation for launch at the UN’s 3rd International Conference on Chemicals Management which will take place in September 2012.
The group will meet next in the UK in August.
