Industry, government and community leaders gather for mining workshop in Peru

Over 300 people attended a Natural Resources and Development Forum and Partnership Fair in Lima, Peru, in the presence of Peruvian Prmie Minister Mr Jorge del Castillo. The forum was organized by Sociedad Nacional de Minería, Petróleo y Energía (SNMPE), and supported by ICMM.

The main objectives of the widely attended workshop were to bring stakeholders together particularly from local mayors and regional governors to explore the range of multi-stakeholder initiatives available in relation to the six themes of the Resource Endowment initiative.

There were two parallel components to the meeting: a forum attended by over 300 people, and a fair in which 22 organizations exhibited good practice sustainable development and capacity building initiatives.

The fair was officially opened by Mr Rafael Rey, Peruvian Minister for Production. The key note speech at the Forum was given by Dr John Groom (Anglo American), chairman of ICMM’s Resource Endowment initiative working group. It was organized in such a way that delegates, particularly those from the municipalities, had the opportunity to visit the stalls and have direct discussion with organizations exhibiting.

In addition to two main sessions on sustainable development and capacity building, there was a lunch time address from Peruvian Prime Minister Mr Jorge del Castillo and closing remarks from Mr Ysaac Cruz, President of SNMPE and Mr Juan Valdivia, the Minister for Energy and Mines. Mr Cruz stated that better guidance was needed on the use of Peru’s royalty system, the Canon Minero, and that citizen participation through decentralization and simplification should be encouraged.
