ICMM makes intervention at UN Climate Change Conference in Bonn
The private sector should take a more active role in tackling climate change, said ICMM’s John Drexhage in a formal intervention at the UN Climate Change Conference in Bonn this month.
“The decisions made at Copenhagen and Cancun signify a wholesale change in the role and profile of many groups of stakeholders, particularly those in the research, local governments and private sector organizations,” he said.
The agreements made at Copenhagen and Cancun have identified a $100 billion funding target of which the lion’s share will come from the private sector.
“Clearly, under that scenario, the private sector needs to play an active role in defining how such investments can most constructively and efficiently operate,” he added.
ICMM presented its new program on climate change at the Bonn conference. This program aims to ensure that ICMM member companies play their part in addressing climate change while securing the competitiveness of the industry in a future low-carbon economy.
It is based on a principles-based approach that recognizes a shift toward national and regional actions with a view to developing a stable global policy regime in the longer term.
