Rio Tinto recognized for good water performance
Rio Tinto has won an award for best practice in water stewardship at the 2011 Global Water Awards presented at the Global Water Summit in Berlin.
The award, presented by former UN Secretary General Kofi Annan, recognized Rio Tinto’s strategic approach to managing water since 2005 when they introduced their global water strategy.
The water strategy has enabled Rio Tinto to develop appropriate management responses, engage with local communities and other organizations on practical water solutions, as well as participate with governments and others on water stewardship policy and approaches.
ICMM has a program on water management in mining. In 2008, the organization commissioned a scoping exercise and currently is working to develop a common framework for water reporting.
Member companies have committed to continually improving their social and environmental performance in accordance with ICMM’s Sustainable Development Framework.
