Resource Endowment initiative - Phase 1

Children in the Amungme village of Banti enjoy newPhase 1of this initiative started in May 2004 and culminated in December 2004.

Phase 2 - January - December 2005.

Phase 3 - January 2006 to date.

Analytical Framework and Tools

An analytical framework was developed, focusing on governance processes, including the underlying factors and "rules of the game" that affect social and economic interactions and outcomes.

These aspects were incorporated into a practical toolkit to assess local, regional and national socio-economic impacts of mining. The Toolkit also dealt with how mining operations affect governance structures, institutions and policy changes at different levels of government.

Phase 1 also involved an extensive literature review and comparative analysis of 33 countries with a high dependence on minerals. The review proved very successful in identifying the key factors that can contribute to the successful transformation of mineral endowment into development that is really sustainable.

Initial findings from Phase 1 were critiqued in a multi-stakeholder workshop in London in November 2004.

The Analytical Framework Executive Summary outlines both the Literature Review and The Analytical Framework Main Report, assessing the performance of 33 mineral dependent countries across a range of socio-economic indicators.

The Resource Endowment Toolkit provides a systematic and consistent approach to documenting the impacts (both good and bad)of individual mining projects on a local, regional and national level.
