EUROPEAN UNION
REACH is the European Community Regulation on chemicals and their safe use (EC 1907/2006). It stands for with the registration, evaluation, authorisation and restriction of chemical substances.
REACH, which came into force on 1 June 2007, reverses the common premise that it is the role of regulators to prove that a product may be harmful and instead places the burden of proof (of safety) onto industry. Consequently, manufacturers and importers are now required to gather information on the properties of the substances they use and produce and to register this in a central database. Depending on the risk characterization of a material or chemical, authorization may then be required before it can be used or produced.
Eurometaux has been a leader in supporting implementation of REACH. They have launched the REACH Metals Gateway to support industry comply with this regulation.
