Cynthia Carroll talks about community development in new video
Community development must lie at the heart of any mining operation, says Cynthia Carroll, CEO of Anglo American, in the latest video produced by ICMM.
“Today we support well over 3,700 businesses around the world from South Africa to Venezuela, to Chile to Brazil and now in Peru” Cynthia Carroll says in a conversation with ICMM President Anthony Hodge.
Ms Carroll highlights that in 2009 her company invested 82.5 million dollars in social investment as part of her company’s effort to create small and medium enterprises that will sustain host communities in the long term.
This investment stems from the importance given to respecting host communities and understanding their aspirations for the future in Anglo American’s approach to community relations.
“We are not simply consulting with the communities when we need something like licensing, permits or access to resources,” she continues. “But we have an ongoing dialogue, so the communities understand what we’re all about.”
Anthony Hodge points out that mining companies can no longer operate without effective community engagement. He says: “the greatest insurance policy that any mining company can have is community trust”.
