ICMM makes formal intervention at UN Commission on Sustainable Development
Collaboration is key to harnessing the benefits of mining, Fernanda Diez said in an official statement at the UN Commission for Sustainable Development (UNCSD) in New York this week.
Supply chain management, water usage and climate change were all identified as critical issues for the industry – in an intervention presented at the mining session of an intergovernmental preparatory meeting for the UNCSD 19 meetings in May.
UNCSD was created after the 1992 Rio Earth Summit with a mandate to implement Agenda 21 – a global plan of action for sustainable development.
The message from ICMM was around the need for concerted action around a series of sustainable development challenges for the mining and metals industry.
It has been reviewing a range of topics in a series of two-year cycles. Mining is included in the current cycle along with transport, chemicals, waste management, mining and sustainable consumption and production.
