GRI Mining and Metals Sector Supplement

This Supplement is specific to the mining sector and aims to provide an easy-to-use seamless guide to GRI 'in accordance' guidelines. It was developed by a multi-stakeholder working group co-convened by the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) and the International Council on Mining and Metals (ICMM).

What is it?

The GRI Mining and Metals Sector Supplement is a version of GRI’s G3 Guidelines tailored for the mining and metals sector. The G3 Guidelines are to be used by organizations for measuring and reporting on the economic, environmental, social, and governance dimensions of their activities, products, and services.

The G3 Guidelines set out Reporting Principles and Performance Indicators for economic, environmental, and social disclosures. In addition, the Supplement includes sector-specific commentary on the Guidelines’ content and additional Performance Indicators for the sector, ensuring that sustainability reports by mining and metals companies effectively cover the sector’s key issues.

The Supplement was designed to cover all main activities in the sector - exploration, mining and primary metal processing, including metal fabrication and recycling - and the complete project life cycle, from development through operational lifetime to closure and post-closure. And it covers all of the following key issues for the sector, expanded from the G3 Guidelines:

All companies in the sector are encouraged to use the Supplement for preparing sustainability reports. In order to meet the requirements of GRI Application Level A, reporters in the sector will need to use the Supplement from 31 December 2011.
