Teck - Stakeholder Engagement
Stakeholder Engagement
In order to promote stakeholder engagement in Teck’s sustainability reporting process, Teck assembled a panel of diverse stakeholders and technical experts. The panel was tasked with reviewing Teck’s 2007 sustainability report in order to improve Teck’s environmental reporting performance in the future. The panelists, with the exception of the two employees, were independent of Teck and included representatives of Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs), the Provincial Government, local aboriginal groups, academia and other leading metals and mining companies.
The review panel has also engaged with Teck on its sustainability vision statement and strategy and Teck’s materiality assessment. By instating a review panel and publicly publishing comments on their corporate website, Teck has demonstrated transparent reporting and has engaged with colleagues from outside the organization including government representatives in order to determine points of improvement and to promote communication in order to improve their sustainability strategy.
Teck has also worked to map their current staffing and resources in order to identify personnel to drive their community programs. They have actively supported their staff by developing engagement programs, dialogue training and forming a virtual community of practice network across exploration, operations and corporate sites.
In addition, Teck has engaged indigenous peoples who live on land near Teck’s operational facilities by establishing an Indigenous Affairs Practice Group. The senior management and the sustainability department personnel from multiple sites are all engaged in aboriginal relations.
Teck hired a corporate manager dedicated to social and community development, and designated another corporate employee to work with operations in community engagement; established guidance on company roles and responsibilities with regards to Communities of Interest; and commissioned the Centre for Social Response, based in Brisbane, Australia, to provide training on community engagement and dialogue to their community’s staff. 20 Teck employees from operations, exploration and corporate completed the first training session in Vancouver in October 2008 with a further 13 employees from Latin America completing the course in Santiago, Chile in March 2009. In addition, Teck held senior executive sessions to engage with and build the capacity of their leaders and senior management.
