Newmont’s CEO speaks to ICMM about safety in mining

Safety in mining is not only critical – it’s personal, says Newmont CEO Richard O’Brien in the latest video produced by ICMM.

He talks to ICMM about the importance of leadership and creating a culture of safety.

“If leadership at the top doesn’t say it’s important – it’s not going to happen,” he said. “But it’s not enough to provide them with rules and technologies. It’s really a hearts and mind commitment.”

ICMM President Anthony Hodge also features in the short video. He highlights ICMM’s role in precipitating change. “By sharing best practices we can strengthen the culture of safety as fast and effectively as possible,” he says.

Richard echoes his sentiments: “One of the things about ICMM is the establishment of standards that we can aspire to. Because if we are not raising the bar, nobody is going to do it.”
