Rio Tinto supports Indigenous Peoples and biodiversity in Australia
ICMM member Rio Tinto is sponsoring the Australian Season at the British Museum – a program dedicated to indigenous Australian art and biodiversity.
The season will run from April to October 2011 and features a variety of exhibitions and installations.
These include Australian biodiversity landscapes, as well as prints, drawings and handicrafts produced by indigenous communities.
Jan du Plessis, Chairman, Rio Tinto said: "We welcome the opportunity to help share the great cultural contribution of indigenous Australians and the importance of biodiversity with the millions of people visiting the British Museum this year.
As a member of ICMM, Rio Tinto has committed to improve its biodiversity performance in line with the Sustainable Development Framework.
The company has also signed ICMM’s Position Statement on Mining and Indigenous Peoples.
The announcement comes one week after Rio Tinto committed to increase its donation for the victims of the devastating Queensland floods to $2 million (£1.25 million).
Rio Tinto Energy chief executive Doug Ritchie said the increased donation followed ongoing flooding across much of Queensland over the past week.
Rio Tinto has also launched an employee volunteering program to make it easier for staff to help with the recovery work.
