ICMM appoints John Drexhage as new climate change director
ICMM has appointed John Drexhage of the Canada-based International Institute for Sustainable Development (IISD) as the new Director for Climate Change.
The appointment for this newly created post marks a serious commitment by ICMM to engage in the global fight against climate change.
Mr Drexhage, who has been Director of IISD's Climate Change and Energy Program for 10 years, will be taking up his new position in mid-March.
ICMM President Anthony Hodge said, “I am thrilled to welcome John to the organization. His widely-acknowledged expertise is precisely what the sector needs to advance constructive thinking on climate change. The fact that we have turned to IISD reflects our respect for them as an organization.”
“John's appointment is an important development which will enable ICMM and its members to play a meaningful and constructive role in addressing the challenges presented by climate change”, added Mick Davis, chair of the ICMM working group on climate change, and chief executive of Xstrata.
In 2009, ICMM’s Council of CEOs ratified a common policy on climate change, and since then the organization has been working to reach a better understanding of what role the mining industry should play with regard to climate change. The creation of a directorship under John Drexhage sees the formalization of this sustained effort.
