ICMM releases newsletter on mining and Indigenous Peoples
This issue of the Good Practice newsletter: New Routes to Engagement is themed around mining and Indigenous Peoples to mark the launch of ICMM's recent Good Practice Guide: Indigenous Peoples and Mining. It contains articles on some of the key issues facing Indigenous Peoples and the efforts being made to address them.
A special report highlights a number of innovative projects that have been undertaken with ICMM member companies. Highlights include Freeport Indonesia’s community education and training courses in Papua and MMG’s cultural awareness programs in Western Australia.
Two comment articles provide expert opinions on the same topic. Professor David Brereton provides further context and background to the Guide, while Aidan Davy, Senior Program Director at ICMM, tackles the complex issue of Free, Prior and Informed Consent (FPIC).
In the 60 second profile, Rebecca Adamson, founder of the NGO First Peoples Worldwide (FPW), calls for greater collaboration between Indigenous Peoples and business.
This issue also features news on other recent ICMM initiatives, including a new biodiversity case studies publication, our recent stakeholder opinion survey, ICMM's formal comments on the revised IFC Performance Standards and President Anthony Hodge's radio interview with the BBC World Service about safety.
