Barrick joins Voluntary Principles on Security and Human Rights
ICMM member Barrick has joined the Voluntary Principles on Security and Human Rights and is undertaking two new corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiatives to further improve its sustainability performance.
The Voluntary Principles are a set of guidelines by which companies in the extractive sector can maintain the safety and security of their operations while ensuring respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms.
Moreover, Barrick will appoint an independent Director to its Board of Directors with experience in corporate social responsibility. The company will also establish an external CSR Advisory Board that will provide advice and guidance on challenging social and environmental issues and encourage further innovation and leadership in CSR.
As a member of ICMM, Barrick has committed to its Sustainable Development Framework, which includes the respect of fundamental human rights and cultures.
ICMM holds observer status for the Voluntary Principles, which were developed through a process of dialogue between the governments of the United Kingdom and the United States, extractive and energy sector companies, and NGOs with a common interest in human rights and corporate social responsibility.
“Barrick has always been committed to good corporate citizenship and corporate social responsibility,” said Aaron Regent, Barrick’s President and CEO. “We are taking these steps to further improve and address the challenges associated with the complex social and political environments where we do business. We are striving to ensure we have a strong partnership with the communities where we operate and continue to be welcomed and supported as a constructive member of the community.”
