MMG supports crocodile conservation in Lao PDR
The Minerals and Metals Group (MMG) is helping to save the Southeast Asian (‘Siamese’) crocodile from extinction in Lao PDR. The project, a partnership between the Government of the Lao PDR Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) and MMG aims to ensure the long-term survival of the species and establish enduring conservation of wetlands and associated biodiversity locally.
The Southeast Asian crocodile (crocodylus siamensis) is listed by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) as a critically endangered species and is one of four crocodile species most threatened with extinction in the wild. All hunting and trade in Lao PDR is prohibited and the crocodile is largely peaceful and not considered a threat to humans.
Funding and logistical support
The company was able to mobilize funding from its environment and biodiversity offset program to support the early studies and also provide logistical support to the Lao Department of Forestry and the WCS program in Lao PDR for crocodile population and habitat surveys. Local knowledge and ideas have been important, while dam repair, pond construction and alternate sourcing of water are examples of initiatives proposed to shift pressure from key sites where crocodiles and critical nesting habitat can be recovered. MMG is investing US$600,000 in the three phase project.
“It goes to show just what can be achieved when different people and organizations work together and combine their resources,” said CEO Andrew Michelmore.
MMG has also been playing its part in another important sustainability initiative. Near its Century Mine in Queensland, Australia, the company has been working with experts and local communities to preserve items which highlight the region’s history and culture. The mine now employs a team of “cultural monitors” to search for artefacts and build up local cultural knowledge before any ground disturbance.
