VALE

Business summary

Vale S.A. (Vale) is the second largest diversified metals and mining company in the world and the largest private publicly traded company in Latin America by market capitalization. Vale is the world’s largest producer of iron ore and pellets, key raw materials for the steel industry, and one of the largest producers of nickel. Vale is headquartered in Rio de Janeiro and its shares are traded on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE), São Paulo Stock Exchange (Bovespa), Euronext Paris and Madrid Stock Exchange (Latibex).

Vale’s ICMM membership

Vale joined ICMM in 2006. Examples of the company’s engagement include providing input into ICMM reports and position statements. Vale has submitted case studies for publication in the “Indigenous Peoples and Mining Good Practice Guidance”, on the website (on mine closure and on preservation of traditional languages) and it has been following closely the recent climate change debate within the organization.

The fact that ICMM is a respected global institution that represents the world’s most important mining and metals companies is the fundamental reason behind Vale’s rationale for membership. This, in turn, is complemented by the platform it provides industries and other key stakeholders with to discuss common challenges and propose solutions based on sustainable development principles. ICMM’s contributions also include setting benchmarks, developing toolkits and knowledge-sharing amongst members.”
