Rio Tinto’s ICMM membership

Rio Tinto was one of the founding members of ICMM in 2001. The ICMM was formed as a result of the Global Mining Initiative (GMI) in which Rio Tinto’s then chairman Sir Robert Wilson played a leading role. They have been engaged in most aspects of ICMM activity, for example by providing leadership on the ICMM’s partnership work on mining and the management of biodiversity; technical input into guidelines for reducing the environmental impacts of mining; and community relations advice regarding working with indigenous people.

The company comments: ‘We are members of ICMM because we want to share and participate in the strengthening of policies, processes and systems that advance the mining industry’s contribution to sustainable development.’
