PROJECTS
Community development
One of the challenges for mining investments is to ensure a positive contribution to poverty reduction and sustainable development at the community level.
Mining can be a positive influence, providing employment and infrastructure and supporting community development such as education and healthcare programs.
The aim of this project is to ensure that such programs deliver what the local community needs and wants, and, crucially, that the benefits they bring last beyond closure of the mine.
What is ICMM doing?
In November 2005, ICMM published the Community Development Toolkit in partnership with the World Bank, and with funding support from Energy Sector Management Assistance Programme (ESMAP). The Toolkit contains 17 practical tools which can be used by companies, communities, and government agencies as well as non-governmental and community based organizations at all stages of the mining project cycle.
Building good relationships with communities and leaving a lasting positive impact is essential for the continuing success of the mining and metals industry
Together, the tools demonstrate that the most successful community development activities are those that incorporate the following principles:
- Adopt a strategic approach - activities will be most effective when aligned with long-term objectives and existing plans of all stakeholders
- Ensure consultation and participation - the best designed plans will falter if there is insufficient trust and participation by all stakeholders
- Work in partnership - organizations with different skills, but shared interests and objectives, can achieve more through working together
- Strengthen capacity - programs that strengthen capacity are likely to be more sustainable.
The Toolkit is available in English, Spanish and Mandarin. The Spanish version was launched in October 2006 in partnership with SNMPE and IDEM. The Mandarin version was launched in November 2006 in partnership with China International Mining Group (CIMG).
What will our work achieve?
Building good relationships with communities and leaving a lasting positive impact is essential for the continuing success of the mining and metals industry. By helping communities to develop themselves in a sustainable manner, a mining company is also helping its own business to succeed.
We believe the Toolkit can assist in moving beyond the donor/recipient model of community relations to community development programs which are a mutually beneficial partnership process. If this occurs, the goal of sustainable community development will more likely be achieved.
