ICMM and Vale host sessions at World Mines Ministries Forum 2008

ICMM hosted the opening plenary session at the World Mines Ministries Forum held in Toronto on Friday 29 February - Sunday 2 March. Over 100 people attended the forum including delegations from the mines ministries of Nigeria, Zambia and Ecuador.

ICMM member Vale also hosted a session at the Forum, titled Drivers of a new world dynamic, and moderated by Vale's Rafael Benke. The session focused on the impact of the BRICs (Brazil, Russia, India and China) as consumers and producers in the sector, and special consideration was given to the emergence of developing countries as global leaders in the sector, including their participation in major mergers & acquisitions.

The ICMM-hosted session was called Governance and sustainable development in mining and metals and was moderated by ICMM's Kathryn McPhail. The aim was to deliver perspectives from a range of key stakeholders (from government, companies, NGOs and multi-lateral institutions) on the role of governance in delivering broad-based socio-economic benefits from mineral resource investments in emerging economies.

Peter Sinclair (Barrick Gold Corporation) spoke on the economic and social impacts of the company's North Mara mine in Tanzania. His presentation was followed by a view from civil society in holding governments and companies accountable which was delivered by Rees Warne of Catholic Relief Services.

In the second half of the session, the focus was put on the role of government. Siyan Malomo of the Nigerian Geological survey gave an overview of the aims of the Nigerian government in delivering economic and social benefits from mining in the country.

The session closed with a presentation by Jonas Moberg of the Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (EITI). He outlined the work of the EITI and drew parallels with the views of all the speakers that partnership and collaboration between all stakeholders is needed to deliver the full socio-economic benefits from mining.

All the presentations from the session are available on the World Mines Ministries Forum website - www.wmmf.org.
