ICMM working group progresses alloys assessment projects
The ICMM Metals and Minerals Technical Working Group (MMTWG), chaired by Dr Andy Bush of the Lead Development Association International, met on 7-8 January 2008 in Denver.
The group discussed a range of issues related to risk assessment, chemicals management and classification and labelling, with a particular focus on establishing two new projects aimed at developing new methods for assessing alloys. This is an urgent requirement for the industry under both REACH (the new EU Chemicals legislation) and GHS (the new international system for classification and labelling).
The group also prioritized a range of activities related to the metals environmental risk assessment (MERAG) and health risk assessment (HERAG) projects. These include drafting updates and new material, as well as building further capacity for promotion of the concepts on the international stage. It is envisaged that ICMM and Eurometaux will publish updates for MERAG in 2008.
