Chinese version of Materials Stewardship publication launched in Beijing
ICMM’s Dr John Atherton launched a Chinese language version of the ICMM publication Maximizing Value: Guidance on implementing materials stewardship in the minerals and metals value chain at Tsinghua University in Beijing on 27 November 2007. The event was attended mainly by academics involved in the area of materials stewardship.
In his presentation, John explained that Materials Stewardship is a concept ICMM has defined as the range of activities required for optimal and appropriate use of minerals and metals in society. The Maximizing Value document is a key element in ICMM’s sustainable development agenda and contains case studies, practical guidance and outlines of recognized business drivers.
John’s presentation briefly examined the drivers and key attributes of materials stewardship and touched upon some of the work ICMM is doing to support implementation of materials stewardship in the mining and metals sector. John explained that this requires that the mining and metals industry and other stakeholders develop practices not only to ensure that minerals and metals are produced and used responsibly, but to ensure that the present and future value drawn from the materials is maximized.
The publication was translated with the support of the China International Mining Group.
