The health and safety imperative - ICMM's December newsletter

ICMM has released the latest issue of its newsletter, Good Practice. In this issue, we return to a health and safety theme with a reminder of just how important this area is to our members and the wider industry.

In her leading article, Anglo American CEO Cynthia Carroll considers worker safety, not just as a slogan, but a deeply held value that will not be compromised. This means taking all the necessary steps to avoid injuries and, worse still, fatalities – even if it may involve closing down a facility. She argues that failure to reach this goal, and to keep people safe, will seriously threaten licenses to operate.

Gold Fields executive vice president Terrence Goodlace examines how the company regrettably fell below its own safety standards recently and outlines the measures that are being undertaken to make fatal accidents a thing of the past. We also look at our work in the area of disease management and the development of a common approach to metals risk assessment based on the best available science.
