Southern Africa Reach / GHS seminar

The Chamber of Mines of South Africa, ICMM, and Eurometaux hosted a seminar in Johannesburg for mining companies operating in South Africa and other Sub-Saharan countries.

The seminar was the first in a series organized by ICMM and Eurometaux to update interested parties exporting materials and products to the European Union on the new chemicals regulation known as REACH (Registration, Evaluation and Authorisation of Chemicals) and on the UN Globally Harmonised System of Classification and Labelling (UNGHS) which is being implemented by UN Countries.

ICMM Program Director Dr John Atherton, said that companies affected by these pieces of legislation must familiarize themselves with the new systems and take appropriate steps during the implementation process, which will occur in stages over the next ten years.

Around 100 delegates from South Africa, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Zambia and Mozambique participated in the workshop.

The implementation of UNGHS follows commitments made by UN member countries to the responsible management of chemicals, including mining products, at the World Summit on Sustainable Development held in Johannesburg in 2002.
