REACH Metals Gateway is launched

The REACH Metals Gateway supports the mining and metals industry worldwide in its implementation of the new EU Chemicals Legislation. It provides basic information on the nature of REACH as well as more detailed guidance for companies to help them meet their new obligations.

REACH, which came into force on 1 June 2007, reverses the common premise that it is the role of regulators to prove that a product may be harmful and instead places the burden of proof (of safety) onto industry. Consequently, manufacturers and importers are now required to gather information on the properties of the substances they use and produce and to register this in a central database. Depending on the risk characterization of a material or chemical, authorization may then be required before it can be used or produced.

The Gateway, funded by Eurometaux and ICMM, will assist producers and downstream users of minerals and metals by providing vital information and guidance required for REACH compliance. It also provides the user with links to other important resources both within and outside the sector.
