Guide to use of chemicals in the mining and metals industry

ICMM has published GHS: Globally Harmonised System of Classification and Labelling of Chemicals in partnership with Eurometaux and Eurofer.

The leaflet provides a brief overview of the Globally Harmonised System of Classification and Labelling (GHS) which will affect many of the products of the mining and metals industry as well as chemicals used in processing operations.

The system is now undergoing worldwide implementation at a national or regional level. Companies must be prepared to comply with each of the new requirements as regulatory jurisdictions comply with the system.

The added significance for global mining and metals companies is that GHS will provide a basis for future harmonization of wider rules and regulations on chemicals at national, regional and global level. It will for example become the classification and labelling protocol under REACH.

The leaflet outlines the type of actions that companies need to implement to ensure that they are able to comply with the new system in a timely and efficient manner.

A series of seminars will be held in August 2007 to provide training and guidance on specific aspects of GHS and REACH that are relevant to the metals and mining industry.
