ICMM addresses Cobalt Conference

The Cobalt Development Institute recently held its annual conference in Shanghai (9 - 10 May 2007). The conference was based on a broad agenda including market, regulatory and environment and health issues and attracted over 270 participants, many from the Asia-Pacific Region.

ICMM was invited to participate in the conference and John Atherton gave a presentation on ‘The implications of the Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labelling of Substances (UNGHS)’.

His presentation looked at the background to the UNGHS and its principal elements and examined some of the challenges for the metals industry in implementing the new system. The presentation also reviewed the status of activities towards implementation in some key regions and countries.

Dr Atherton’s presentation complemented those given on the new chemicals regulation in the European Union commonly referred to as REACH.

In his opening address to the conference David Weight, General Manager, CDI, announced the recent decision of the board of the CDI to facilitate the development and activities of REACH consortia for cobalt and many of its compounds.
