Government and industry share perspectives on materials stewardship

On 14 May ICMM presented its work on materials stewardship at the Joint International Study Group’s biannual meetings in Lisbon. The delegation, comprising of government representatives as well as industry participants, to the study groups heard two presentations on the theme of stewardship.

The opening presentation introduced the Australian Government’s stewardship handbook which was recently published as part of their Leading Practice series.

Helen Clarke, of the Department of Industry, Tourism and Resources, expanded upon the way in which the publication defines the concept of stewardship for the Australian minerals and metals industry in particular.

In response to this presentation, ICMM’s Ben Davies provided an industry perspective of materials stewardship concepts, building on ICMM’s publication of Maximizing Value. The key focus for ICMM in 2007 and beyond is on communication and outreach through the value chain of minerals and metals – with ICMM’s inaugural Materials Stewardship Round Table expected to be held towards the end of 2007.

Encouragingly the synergies between the concepts developed by the Australian Government and those presented by ICMM were clear and this perhaps reflects the level of engagement between industry and authorities on the subject. The Minerals Council of Australia in particular has been a key stakeholder in both initiatives.
