Workshop briefs industry on risk assessment concepts

ICMM participated in an industry briefing workshop organized by Eurometaux for the European metals and minerals industry on 10 May.

The workshop, which was well attended by company representatives, provided an opportunity to communicate methods and benefits of applying concepts such as those developed in the Metals Environmental Risk Assessment Guidance (MERAG) project and recent EU risk assessments.

The Non-Ferrous Metals industry has invested considerably and been involved extensively in developing risk assessment concepts for various metals. From these extensive projects, a range of scientific concepts and models have been developed and endorsed by scientists as well as regulatory authorities.

These concepts are presented in the MERAG document, recently published by ICMM and Eurometaux, and allow the specific characteristics of metals to be accounted for in local risk assessments, permitting issues and site-management tools.
