ICMM releases findings of survey on Indigenous Peoples issues
ICMM has released the results of a survey commissioned to elicit feedback on the ICMM draft Position Statement on Mining and Indigenous Peoples Issues that was released in March 2006.
Over 50 individuals from Indigenous Peoples’ organizations (44% of respondents), intergovernmental agencies (20%), non-governmental organizations (NGOs)(19%) and government representatives (17%) took part in the survey.
Generally respondents felt that the draft statement was a step forward, although many had reservations. The most frequent concerns were:
- Inadequate recognition of historic and current disadvantage experienced by IPs;
- Inadequate recognition of Indigenous Peoples’ rights, particularly to Free Prior and Informed Consent;
- The need for a stronger and more definite commitment to benefit sharing; and
- That the statement is too “high level” and thus is not helpful for improving implementation.
The full survey report summarizes the feedback provided by the respondents through the consultation and is being used to define the next steps in ICMM’s ongoing work on Indigenous Peoples issues.
