ICMM addresses biodiversity offsets workshop
ICMM, together with the Business and Biodiversity Offsets Program (BBOP), assisted with the organization of a workshop on biodiversity offsets in Perth, Western Australia, hosted by the Australian Centre for Minerals Extension and Research (ACMER).
Held on 29-30 March, it was attended by more than 70 participants, mainly from mining companies, including several ICMM members, and Australian state and federal governments.
ICMM's Andrew Parsons and BBOP's Kerry ten Kate presented an international perspective of biodiversity offsets. Andrew also spoke on the business case for offsets, using ICMM's discussion papers on the subject. Speakers from Australian states that require or are contemplating offsets described their policies and new directions, and several companies, including some ICMM members, described their experiences.
Breakout sessions allowed for extensive debate of the issues surrounding offsets. A rich discussion reflected the advanced implementation of offsets in several Australian states.
