ICMM calls for harmonization in setting occupational exposure limits
ICMM has published The Setting and Use of Occupational Exposure Limits - Current practice. It reviews current national or regional methodologies for setting occupational exposure limits (OELs) and identifies common aspects that could form a framework for global harmonization.
Our goal is to create a more consistent approach to setting and implementing OELs. This will be to the benefit of industry, its workforce and others including governments and proponents of sound health and safety practice.
For ICMM to achieve this aim, we recognize the need for dialogue and understanding among a wide range of stakeholders, companies and territories.
Currently, OELs can differ greatly from one region to another which causes confusion and uncertainty for companies that operate internationally. In many cases there is also a lack of clarity in how these limits have been derived.
This publication provides the foundation for the ICMM OELs initiative and much of its content was used as a framework for discussion at a multi-stakeholder workshop with representatives of the major OEL-setting bodies held in November 2005.
The dialogue and understanding achieved at this workshop (the report of which is also available as an ICMM publication) enabled ICMM to implement an ongoing industry action plan under the supervision of its Health and Safety Task Force.
