Industry alliance is developing guidance for REACH implementation
ICMM participated in a meeting on REACH Implementation Projects (RIPs) in Brussels on 22-23 March. The meeting provided an opportunity for mining and metals companies and associations to review progress and coordinate further input to the RIPs.
Industry input on implementing the European Union REACH legislation is being led by Eurometaux and a multi-sector coalition called the 'REACH Alliance'.
The aim of RIPs is two-fold: to reconcile current chemicals management activities with the requirements of REACH; and to provide the tools and guidance needed for effective implementation by both industry and authorities.
For example, technical guidance for conducting a chemicals safety assessment (to determine whether products are safe to market) is being developed under RIP 3.2. This is being produced in line with the concepts developed in ICMM's MERAG and HERAG projects.
Despite good progress several challenges remain - notably relating to development of the IT support for substance identification and the mechanisms for formation of consortia.
