ICMM addresses cross-sector forum on sustainable buildings
ICMM participated in a workshop on the role of metals and minerals in sustainable buildings on 27-29 March, hosted by the Eden Project in collaboration with Five Winds International and the UNEP/SETAC Life Cycle Initiative.
The aim of the workshop was to share knowledge and experiences across the relevant industry sectors to examine how buildings should be designed and operated more sustainably.
There was a wide range of participants including representatives from mining companies, metals fabricators and the construction industry. ICMM’s John Atherton gave a presentation on materials stewardship, life cycle assessment and metals recycling.
A number of follow-up actions were identified including the need to look at how metals are handled in the various sustainable building rating schemes which have emerged over recent years.
The Eden Project has already acquired a reputation for pushing the boundaries in sustainable construction. Their newly opened education building – The Core – is an exemplar of sustainable construction and its copper roof is a rare demonstration of customer sourcing of metals from a single, responsibly managed mine through a managed supply chain.
