ICMM publishes its Annual Review 2006
ICMM’s 2006 Annual Review is published highlighting the organization’s significant achievements throughout the year. The report records how our activities provide a benchmark for sustainable development performance in the mining and metals sector.
In the review, ICMM’s President Paul Mitchell and its Chairman (and Chief Executive of Rio Tinto) Leigh Clifford said that significant progress had been made in overcoming long-term challenges such as ensuring continued supply through secure access to mineral deposits, demonstrating the social benefits of mining to host governments and communities, and ensuring that materials are consumed safely and sustainably.
During 2006, ICMM launched an assurance procedure to validate members’ compliance with 10 sustainable development principles. It also released new guidance publications on materials stewardship and biodiversity protection, and a toolkit for enhancing socio-economic outcomes of mining investments. These and other initiatives were undertaken with leading stakeholders such as the World Bank, the International Labour Organization and IUCN.
ICMM hosted a landmark safety and health conference, and initiated dialogue with Professor John Ruggie, the UN Special Representative on business and human rights. It also welcomed three new company members: Xstrata, CVRD and Teck Cominco.
Paul Mitchell says, “As our member companies’ performance improves, they will become the developers or partners of choice and thus gain easier access to resources. Together with a lower risk profile, this means cheaper capital and more favourable consideration by investors. This is the win-win we believe in: positive outcomes for the environment and communities, and better business for our members.”
