APEC ministers agree mining policy principles
ICMM President Paul Mitchell took part in the third meeting of the APEC Ministers Responsible for Mining (MRM3) held on 12 - 16 February 2007 in Perth, Australia, where he chaired a well-attended session on life cycle partnerships-stewardship.
In a statement released at the meeting, ministers endorsed the 10 APEC Mining Policy Principles. The last three of these principles made reference to the basic tenets of ICMM’s materials stewardship policy.
The Ministers also formed a “Mining Working Group” which will encourage implementation of these principles. The Group will also be responsible for initiating a draft report for submission to the United Nations Commission on Sustainable Development (UNCSD) process. The latter objective is of particular importance since the UNCSD review cycle for 2010-2011 will focus on both mining and chemicals.
