ICMM Pilot Assurance Procedure Training Workshop
In January 2007, ICMM held a one-day training workshop in Tokyo with 16 representatives from its four Japanese member organizations - Sumitomo Metal Mining, Nippon Mining & Metals, Mitsubishi Materials and the Japan Mining Industry Association.
The aims of the workshop were to:
- raise awareness of the requirements of ICMM’s pilot assurance procedure amongst company representatives;
- seek clarification and respond to questions on the requirements; and
- seek feedback and suggestions for improvement.
There were six sessions facilitated by Britt Banks (Newmont), Kathryn McPhail (ICMM), and representatives from Environmental Resources Management (ERM) Japan and London.
The sessions covered the following areas:
- ICMM Sustainable Development Framework
- Introduction to assurance concepts
- The requirements of the ICMM pilot assurance procedure
- Break-out groups to discuss the detailed assurance criteria in the pilot assurance procedure
- Break-out groups to discuss current approaches to assurance amongst Japanese companies
- Case Study: Newmont.
The discussion covered a wide range of issues relating to the requirements of the ICMM assurance commitment and how member companies will implement assurance.
