Life cycle assessment group meet to discuss future strategy
The ICMM Metals and Minerals Technical Working Group (MMTWG), chaired by Dr Bill Adams of Rio Tinto, met on 10 - 11 January 2007.
The group discussed issues related to risk assessment, chemicals management and classification and labelling. Substantial progress was reported in all areas with particular focus on creating procedural guidance for implementing REACH and on the launch of the forthcoming Metals Environmental Risk Assessment Guidance (MERAG) publication.
The second day of the meeting concentrated on the development of the 'Unit World Model' as a new hazard screening tool for metals. Dr Kevin Farley of Manhattan College presented the latest version which has been funded by ICMM and is nearing completion.
The joint ICMM-Eurometaux-Eurofer project on the UN Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labelling (GHS) was also reviewed with conclusions regarding guidance and implementation for member companies. The group will meet next in mid-2007.
