WHO WE WORK WITH

ISO Social Responsibility Guidance

Modika Platinum MineThe International Standards Organization (ISO) is currently working on the development of international guidance for social responsibility - ISO 26000 due for publication in 2009. Their aim is to produce a plain-English guidance document which sets out the issues in an understandable format for non-specialists.

ICMM has been designated a liaison organization and is providing comments to ISO throughout the development process.

Meetings of the ISO Working Group on Social Responsibility have been held in Brazil in March 2005, in Thailand in September 2005, in Portugal in May 2006, in Sydney in January 2007 and in Vienna in November 2007.

ICMM will be working with the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD) to share information, and monitor progress.

While it is not expected to be used in any certification process, it is thought that ISO 26000 will have strong support from social responsibility practitioners.

ISO has chosen the Swedish Standards Institute and the Brazilian Association of Technical Standards to provide the joint leadership of the ISO Working Group on Social Responsibility.

The standard is intended to add value to, not replace, existing inter-governmental agreements concerning social responsibility, such as the United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights, and those adopted by the International Labour Organization. It should be relevant for the public, private and voluntary sectors, in countries at every stage of development.

ISO is taking action to ensure that the standard will benefit from broad input by all those with a serious interest in social responsibility. This is being achieved by a balanced representation in the working group, of six designated stakeholder categories: industry, government, labour, consumers, non-governmental organizations and others, in addition to geographical and gender-based balance.
