WHO WE WORK WITH
IUCN - ICMM dialogue

In 2004, ICMM and IUCN - the World Conservation Union- signed a memorandum of understanding for an ongoing dialogue between the two organizations on biodiversity conservation, protected areas and mining, (including 'no-go' areas), land-use planning, and legacy.
As a result of the dialogue, a guide was published on Mining and biodiversity in 2006.
In a position statement in 2003, ICMM members made the commitment, among other things, not to explore or mine in World Heritage properties.
One of the objectives of the dialogue is to explore the "potential for more strategic, integrated and participatory approaches to planning and management at the landscape and seascape level as a tool for achieving balanced development and conservation outcomes". This is directly addressed in an ICMM multi-stakeholder project on land use.
In 2008, ICMM, IUCN and the Post-Mining Alliance organized an international roundtable to explore the restoration of mining legacy sites.
ICMM has an ongoing project on Indigenous Peoples within the context of its socio-economic work program and its dialogue with IUCN.
See the 2008 IUCN/ICMM Review of the Dialogue.
AT A GLANCE
ICMM works closely with IUCN on a number of issues, from good practice guidance on mining and biodiversity, to Indigenous Peoples issues, restoration of legacy sites, protected areas review and lanscape level planning.
