ICMM member Rio Tinto publishes guide on integrating gender into communities work

Rio Tinto has released a publication that will provide guidance on how to integrate gender considerations into work with communities through all stages of an operation’s life.

In recent times Rio Tinto, and the broader resources sector, has recognized the critical role that gender plays in the social dynamics of local communities. These social dynamics can impact upon the quality and effectiveness of community engagement programs and the legacy of operations.

The guide is a practical “how to” that covers all stages from exploration through to closure, enabling communities practitioners to integrate gender considerations into existing frameworks and processes.

Whilst the main target audience of the guide is communities practitioners, it will also be relevant to other functions.

The Guide was developed in conjunction with the University of Queensland’s Centre for Social Responsibility in Mining, who were the principal authors. Rio Tinto also sought advice and input from external experts from all regions of the world in developing the guide. The Guide includes case studies from a number of Rio Tinto sites from across the globe.
