Spotlight Series 14 - Tanzania: building bridges on mining policy
This document is part of a Spotlight series produced by ICMM to summarize key aspects of the Resource Endowment initative.
The objectives of the Resource Endowment initiative are to identify the factors that have allowed some countries to benefit from their substantial resource endowments through economic growth and poverty reduction and avoid the so-called ‘resource curse’. It also aims to determine some of the practical steps that can be taken by companies, governments, local communities and aid agencies to build such propitious factors where they are lacking.
Spotlight 14 - "Tanzania: building brigdes on mining policy", looks at the work done in Tanzania where, amid a lively political debate about the role of mining, the latest phase of the Resource Endowment initiative in the country supported two elements of work, both aimed at forging a deeper consensus on ways forward:
- an analysis of the current and future economic impacts of major mines, and
- a workshop bringing together the industry and policy makers to debate key issues.
This action-research project is being done together with UNCTAD and the World Bank Group, with broad stakeholder engagement.
