Mining in Tanzania - What future can we expect?

This paper was written by Alan Roe and Mark Essex of Oxford Policy Management. It was presented at a workshop of key government figures in Dar es Salaam on 18 May 2009 where it generated a healthy debate about the future of mining in Tanzania. The aim of this workshop and of this revised paper is to help the government in its difficult decisions about the implied choice between ongoing support for a policy regime that favours high rates of mining sector growth versus a short-term approach of raising revenues at the risk of lowering sectoral growth in the future.
