WHO WE WORK WITH

Initiative for Responsible Mining Assurance (IRMA)

Goedehoop CollieryIn 2005, a series of informal meetings between industry and non-governmental organization (NGO) representatives, known as the ‘Vancouver Dialogue’, took place to explore interest in developing a system for mine site certification.

The discussions led to a meeting in June 2006 of about 30 participants from NGOs, retail and mining companies. The outcome of the meeting was general support for exploring how a workable system for mine site certification might be created and its practicality. The ‘Initiative for Responsible Mining Assurance’ (IRMA) was established to carry this forward.

ICMM is encouraged to be participating in this initiative. Through its multi-stakeholder nature, IRMA has the potential to develop a system with a high level of credibility and buy-in. In addition, as the initiative aims to build on existing initiatives, an IRMA site certification system could complement the ICMM Sustainable Development Framework, which encompasses both performance and reporting at a corporate level.
